China and the Candidates: John Edwards
January 16, 2008John Edwards is no stranger to China, and has a more comprehensive grasp on the country than most who are running for president. He most recently visited China in 2006 as a guest of the National Committee on US-China Relations, and has incorporated issues relating to China and trade more thoroughly than the average candidate.
Since "protecting American jobs" is one of Edwards' bread and butter issues, he been more vocal on China-related concerns. On the other hand, since he has some experience with the region, he doesn't simply play the China-bashing card. Here are a few of his thoughts on our relationship with China:
"The U.S.-Chinese relationship is a delicate one, which has not been well managed by the current administration. In the coming years, China's influence and importance will only continue to grow. On issues such as trade, climate change, and human rights, our overarching goal must be to get China to commit to the rules that govern the conduct of nations." -John Edwards "Reengaging with the World: A Need for Moral Leadership Foreign Affairs.
