Fox Defends Cigna, Bashes Edwards and the Sarkissian's

Thanks to The Raw Story for the following story (video included):

Fox News host Megyn Kelly teamed up with one of the network's "legal analysts" to bash John Edwards and others who are criticizing an insurance company for dragging its feet in approving a potentially life-saving liver transplant for a now-dead California teen.

The segment also featured a defense attorney, who defended Edwards and the family of 17-year-old Nataline Sarkisyan, but the segment was heavily slanted towards defending insurance company Cigna and tying the Democratic presidential candidate to ambulance-chasing trial lawyers.

Defense attorney Rachel Kugel spoke for about 50 seconds of the five-and-a-half minute segment, according to a rough estimate. Fox News Legal Analyst Mercedes Colwin received more than twice as much talk-time to admonish Edwards and stick up for the poor, demonized insurance company.

"How irresponsible of Edwards to exploit this situation for his own political gain," scolded Colwin. "Cigna did their due diligence."

Kugel pointed out that the company eventually relented, amid heavy protests from nurses unions, and agreed to pay for a transplant for Sarkisian, whose liver had failed due to treatments for relapsed leukemia. The company's decision came too late, though, and Sarkisian died late last year.

"That certainly does show that they did have the capability of paying for it," she said, arguing that it proves the family's case in a lawsuit against the insurer.

The Kelly's Court segment ended with a final word from the host, brushing over other complaints about insurance company penny-pinching to get in one last dig at the third-place Democratic presidential candidate.

"It is not clear at all that Cigna is to blame here," Kelly scolded. "And for John Edwards to make it a campaign issue before all the facts are in makes him sound more like the med-mal [medical malpractice] lawyer he was for years, and less like a presidential candidate."

This video is from Fox's America's Newsroom, broadcast January 14, 2008.

This is absolutely disgusting. Edwards should not be singled out for defending Americans who have been wronged by their insurance companies. What Cigna did was WRONG. Nataline Sarkissian had health insurance. Her family paid for her coverage. They should not have made a medical intervention to prevent care which her family was paying for. To even think to defend Cigna -- who are NOT doctors or nurses, is absurd. Of course, we all know why FOX targeted John. He is the only one who dares to speak out for those who are silenced by corporations. Here at FairMediaNow.com, we are looking for FAIR coverage of ALL candidates.... and FOX News was covering John Edwards.... but in a negative light. This has been a trend in John's coverage. If he gets coverage, it's negative with stories like this and the haircut that wouldn't die. Also, this type of coverage isn't surprising since Rupert Murdoch who owns FOX News has been putting support behind Hillary Clinton. Hm. Interesting, yes? Not really. Think about it.... John is for people like the Sarkissian family.... and Clinton made the statement of John just using people's names out of newspapers for political gain. Coincidence? You be the judge.
